London Design Festival, 2023

Dan Tobin Smith follows previous LDF installations “Void” in 2019 and “The First Law of Kipple” 2014 with the latest in his ongoing “Alphabetical” series, Letter C. In Dan’s “Alphabetical” series, each letter of the alphabet is created using different methods, including camera and lighting techniques, perspective, special effects and set design.

The 21st letter of the alphabet to be completed so far, Letter C is made up of random glass and plastic objects, on display in the window on Curtain Road, available to view by passersby and passing traffic outside of exhibition opening hours. Inspired by the Bell inequality test, Dirac’s three polarisers experiment and the hidden nature of materials and perception, the sculpture exploits the strange phenomenon of polarisation and material. The typographical form, concealed in plain sight, is then revealed by the materials’ previously unseen characteristics.
